Mobile Royale - An Asian Perspective on Mobile Industry

My buddies over at various forums report that Open At Own Risk's secret now appears in Nokia's Download service (after a delay). It appears on a folder called "Secret" in/or "What's Hot"/ "What's New" folder. As you see on the screenshots, there's an application, a ringtone and a wallpaper. But unfortunately, no one has been able to find the secret code to unlock the application yet. AND, very unfortunately, none of the Open At Own Risk items appear on my Download ! client. However, I think that this is just some sort of service from Nokia and not a device launch. Stay tuned !

UPDATE: The secret has now been unlocked. Now how stupid is that.. Give up guys.. ! All you win is a T-Shirt . There are several unlock codes too. I really don't like it when global companies fool it's consumers like this. But after all, they told us to open at our own risk. If you were one of those who couldn't get the app yet, it's available here

Nokia 5800, aka Tube, is to be launched soon. Although the final UI will be a bit different, I hope Nokia won't get mad at me for posting pics of and analyzing the menu of, a device *which has already officially appeared in a movie*.


Typing on the Tube. It supports predictive text and it seems like the usual T9. Despite being a touch pad, the keypad is in the usual Nokia style ( space by zero, caps on/ off by hash etc. ), which is a big plus.




Tube supports screen rotation. An accelerometer probably. The stylus is also visible.




Main menu on the Tube. Nokia is using their NEW, UGLY, MUD COLOUR icon set in this device (at the time of photography, at least). However, I feel that this is the icon set which is going to be used in the final product as it is the latest set used by Nokia and they won't create a new icon set to just leave it in a month or so (this icon set debuted with the E66/ E71 and is also used on S40 6th Edition).
Settings menu has got renamed into Control Panel (I hope the beta tester didn't rename it - well using that way you can also make the Settings menu a Control Panel in your phone - just rename it), which is a tad bit Linux style. If the beta tester didn't move 'em, Real Player has also got a promotion to the main menu which signals that the Tube is video focussed and this can probably be a new Real Player version. Whether it is either default or a change done by the beta tester, bringing the Help menu to the main menu is a good thing which will help new users ultimately. Same can be said on the Calendar and I hope that the Search menu and a new Calculator version is hidden somewhere too.

Note that this is just an early preview of the Tube's "Current" UI. But I think that it is already in it's final stage and the launch is probably due this month.

If the UI and the menu doesn't look much eye candy or an iPhone killer to you, just wait. A better touch device from Nokia is coming and which DOES HAVE a better UI than the Tube at this stage. But what I'm unsure of is its OS. Linux probably (and that's why Nokia said but rejected that some of their future phones are going to be powered by Linux) ? Stay tuned !

All my blogger buddies and readers, this is an open quiz/ survey to you all. What is your favourite mobile phone of all the time ? The question is simple and you may go from just naming it to detailing why it's your favourite. You can also tell us what your current device is (if it's different than your favourite - which can be probably). Readers, please use the comments section, bloggers I'd like it more if you state your opinions on your own blogs so we may make this survey much popular.

So it's my chance:
My *all time* favourite is Nokia 6233.

For all of you newbies, it is a 3G phone running Nokia's S40 OS and it has a 2MP camera with no flash. It supports microSD memory cards. The two features that I like the most in it are it's WONDERFUL speakers (which many tout as the best ever on a mobile - which I totally agree with and those speakers far surpass the speaker quality of Nokia N95) and that it's formfactor is candybar.

What makes it my all-time favourite is it's stability. The phone, already three years since the first production can be easily referred to as one of the most stable phones ever made by Nokia and it also does not have a single moving part.
My second favourite device is what I call the King of S60 - Nokia N95 - and of course it is the unrivalled king in my opinion.

This is just my opinion. What about yours ?

While helping people at Nokia Discussion Forums today, I saw a discussion on hiding files on a Nokia N73 and realised that it was still confusing for many users. So prior to going offline for a week for my exams, I thought of helping out you guys with this little guide. The good part is that, this guide is not only for the N73, but also for any Symbian OS device (ranging from Nokia 6600 to Samsung i450 to Nokia N95 8GB and on).
1. Download Y-Browser or any other file browser of your choice (X-Plore, ActiveFile etc.) and install [Please select the ActiveFile_3rd_v1.25_signed_without_allfiles_screencapture.sisx version of ActiveFile unless you have hacked your phone's system] it. For those guys do not have PCs, if the default Web browser of your phone seem too hard to handle for you, use Opera Mini 4.1.
2. Select and run your downloaded file browser from Applications folder (or from DrJukka.com folder in Y-Browser's case).
3. Scroll to the file that you want to hide. Select Attributes.
(Options > File > Attributes, in Y-Browser,
Press 6 in X-Plore )
4. Set the hiding status to Hidden.
5. Done ! Your file is invisible now.

There are many other ways to hide your files too, but this is the easiest way to do it.


To unhide a hidden file..

You first need to set your file browser to show all files ( Options > Settings > General > Show All Files > Yes in Y-Browser,
Press 0 and check Show Hidden Files on X-Plore).
Then scroll to your hidden file and change the file attributes to Unhidden.

Note that the files will not be shown on phone's default File Browser also while hidden.
Most of the links are to 3rd Edition software, but you may find 2nd Edition file explorers for free by Googling too.

This is the active standby feature in the upcoming S60 5th Edition. The UI can be subjected to changes in the final product, but at least this is the way it was planned. Thanks to ICEman_c81 once again, for providing these great screenshots.

The above is a screenshot of the VGA resolution version of S60 5th Edition UI. As you see, it is touch enabled and you won't need the application key (top left) on the keypad anymore. The screenshot was taken on Carbide UI 3.2.

I was sick of the non living, dumb style themes on S60 3rd devices and Sony Ericsson devices always beat Nokia in this sector. Same can be sometimes said on icons and I personally do not prefer the new icons found on new E Series and upcoming S40 6th devices. While I was on search of a good theme today, I found a really great one. That is, Nokia Trends Lab (or NTL) theme by Flahorn, bringing a great futuristic look and my favourite Flahorn icons to S60 3rd Edition. This is another great creation by Flahorn as always and not to mention his own unique Flahorn icon set which beats default S60 icons in every way but yet not taking away the original look and feel of your S60 device. Sure, Flahorn is one of the very best theme creators (or shall we call him an artist - his icon set, his arts and all are available on his homepage) for S60 and he's really good enough to lead Nokia's UI design too.. Great work Flahorn, keep it up !

Creating big news for the Symbian ecosystem, Nokia Corp. has decided to acquire all the shares of Symbian Limited. Symbian Ltd. is the manufacturer of Symbian OS, which is the core platform for UIQ and S60 UIs. Nokia already owns a controlling stake in Symbian, but with this decision they will be acquiring the remainig 52% shares from other shareholders for an estimated EUR264 million. They have also decided to set up Symbian Foundation in cooperation with some key players of the mobile industry including AT&T, EA Mobile, LG Electronics, Motorola, NTT DoCoMo, Samsung, Sony Ericsson, T-Mobile, Texas Instruments and Vodafone. All of the mobile manufacturers in Symbian Foundation are already using the Symbian platform. Making the rumours of a July 17 release event more stable, Eldar at Mobile-Review has finally released the details of upcoming Nokia devices. According to his (still Russian only) article...
N79 - would be a low cost version of N82. Available from Q3 2008 at 250 - 275 Euros.
N85 - the video focussed device is expected by Nokia to be a mass market device. It will be released in the same time as N79 and will cost 350 - 375 Euros. He also notices that the N85 prototypes have been very stable. As we already know, he loves the device.
5800 Tube - Another 2008 release. Will only be an experiment of the Touch platform.


Eldar also mentions of an E75, a Sofie and a Trisha. Which, according to him, are already widespread as prototypes and he's eagerly waiting to see who'l leak the first photos of those devices. He mentions that there are around ten more not leaked Nokia devices slated for release this year.


I'm not surprised if either Sofie or Trisha is a touch device which Eldar mentioned that his little daughter played with so eagerly and handled so easily.

The Nokia E90 got Flash Lite 3 support from its latest firmware. But many users noted that Flash Lite 3 didn't work fine even after the firmware update. Our friend Steve from All About Symbian has found a fix for this problem - hard reset your E90. To find out more on his fix, click here.

According to a recent report by Gartner Inc., LG has been able to surpass Sony Ericsson gaining the fourth place on the worldwide mobile phone market. LG, which only had a 6.2% market share in Q1 2007 has grown by 1.8% to get a market share of 8% in the same quarter of 2008 while slipping Sony Ericsson down to the fifth place in the market. Sony Ericsson, which had a 8.4% share in the market in Q1 2007 has fell down to 7.5% in Q1 2008. Motorola has fallen by 8.2% to a 10.2% market share while still retaining its third place. Samsung grew by 2.2% in the same period to a 14.4% share of the market while still leading the way, Nokia grew by 3.6% to a 39.1% market share, over the 35.5% share it had on the year ago period, retaining its spot as the number one mobile phone manufacturer.

It seems that Nokia is continually updating its devices and getting ready for something. The E61i just got a firmware update to v3.0. According to Play.com, the much hyped Nokia N96 is to be shipped on from 31st July. But honestly, I don't think you'll have to wait that longer. Because,
1. 3G iPhone might probably be released in June
2. There are lots of upcoming (and one better than N96) Nokia devices to be announced.
